Discover Hiking on Malta’s South Coast

A Hidden Gem: The Wild South Coast

Malta’s unspoilt south coast offers a magnificent setting for seaside walks, particularly from the end of September when the weather becomes pleasantly mild. This area is perfect for discovering breathtaking scenery and enjoying the serenity of the charming fishing village of Marsaxlokk. Known for its colorful fishing boats, or luzzus, which bear the Phoenician eye to ward off the sea’s dangers, Marsaxlokk is a peaceful retreat with a rich history. The village is especially tranquil during the week, but beware of the bustling Sunday market, which is popular with both locals and tourists.

The Marsaskala to Marsaxlokk Walk

The hike begins at Bajja ta’ San Tumas, located just outside Marsaskala. This sheltered bay, with its small sandy beach and flat rocks, offers a perfect spot for year-round swimming in the turquoise waters. Even in November, the sea temperature can exceed 20 degrees Celsius. There’s also a beach restaurant open all year round, making it a great place to start your journey.

From Bajja ta’ San Tumas, follow the seafront path southwards. The route offers stunning sea views, with a series of pristine white coves and cliffs. The trail is mostly stony but not too challenging, making it suitable for most walkers. Those with a fear of heights can safely stay away from the edge, but good shoes and plenty of water are essential, as there is little shade along the way.

St. Peter’s Pool: A Natural Wonder

For those seeking a shorter hike, a direct route of about 5 km (approximately an hour) will take you straight to Marsaxlokk. However, if you want to explore more, consider a detour to Ras il-Fenek, located at GPS coordinates 35.838898, 14.559249. This spot offers a splendid panoramic view that is well worth the extra effort.

The longer, 8.2 km route takes you to St. Peter’s Pool, a natural rock formation that has created a stunning pool-like area on the cliffside. Despite its popularity with tourists, this spot is a must-see. To fully appreciate the beauty of St. Peter’s Pool, follow the coastline for a bit of solitude before making your way down to Marsaxlokk, passing by the Delimara power station without letting it detract from your experience.
