Discover the French Creek: Hidden Gem of Senglea

Nestled on the backside of Senglea, French Creek is one of the remarkable inlets of Valletta’s Grand Harbor. This natural basin, rich in history and maritime significance, offers a unique blend of heritage, scenic beauty, and modern utility.

A Historical Waterway

The Grand Harbor, shaped over millennia by the valleys feeding into it, is home to several creeks, including:

  • Marsa Creek,
  • Dockyard Creek,
  • Kalkara Creek,
  • Rinella Creek,
  • French Creek.

French Creek stands out for its historical importance, having played a pivotal role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, the French invasion of 1798, and later as a naval hub under British rule.

Role in the Great Siege

Fort Saint Michael, located along French Creek in Senglea, was constructed in 1552 to defend against Ottoman forces. It:

  • Withstood fierce assaults during the siege alongside Fort St Angelo and Fort St Elmo.
  • Was rebuilt as Saint Michael Cavalier in 1581, though much of it was demolished in the 20th century.

Post-siege, the area transformed into a center for maritime activities, with the construction of drydocks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

From French Invasion to British Rule

The creek owes its name to the French fleet’s landing during Napoleon’s invasion in 1798. After Grandmaster Ferdinand von Hompesch refused Napoleon’s demands for supplies, Valletta was bombarded, and the French forces occupied Malta within days.

Under British rule, French Creek became a strategic naval base, evolving to accommodate larger vessels. Key milestones include:

  • The completion of Somerset Dock in 1871 and Hamilton Dock in 1892.
  • The area’s transformation into a Royal Navy stronghold, supporting British dominance in the Mediterranean.

Maritime Legacy

During World War II, French Creek was a vital site for British naval operations, enduring heavy bombing by German and Italian forces. One of its most dramatic moments came during Operation Pedestal in 1942, when the merchant ship Ohio delivered critical supplies amidst cheers from the Maltese.

Today, French Creek remains central to Malta’s maritime industry, housing the Palumbo Shipyard, one of Europe’s largest and most productive shipyards. With seven drydocks, it serves both commercial vessels and luxury superyachts.
