Discover Żabbar, Malta: A Hidden Gem Near the Three Cities

Why visit Żabbar during your stay in Malta?

Just a few minutes from The Three Cities and The Snop House in Senglea, Żabbar (Ħaz-Żabbar) is one of Malta's most authentic towns. Often overlooked by visitors heading towards Valletta or Mdina, Żabbar offers a quieter side of the island, where centuries of history, impressive Baroque architecture and everyday Maltese life come together. Whether you're interested in cultural heritage, photography or simply exploring beyond the main tourist routes, Żabbar makes for a rewarding half-day excursion.

Where is Żabbar?

Located in south-eastern Malta, Żabbar sits just beyond the historic fortifications of the Three Cities, making it easily accessible from Senglea, Birgu and Cospicua.

The town borders:
• Kalkara;
• Xajra;
• Fgura;
• Marsaskala;
• Zejtun.

Its strategic position near the Grand Harbour has made it an important settlement throughout Maltese history while allowing it to preserve a peaceful residential atmosphere that contrasts with the busier tourist destinations.

A town shaped by Malta's history

Żabbar has played a significant role in many of Malta's defining historical events. During the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, Ottoman forces established camps in the surrounding area as they attempted to conquer the island defended by the Knights of St John.

More than two centuries later, between 1798 and 1800, the town became an important base for the Maltese uprising against the French occupation. One of the most notable battles took place near the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces, where traces of French cannonballs can still be seen embedded in the historic walls.

In recognition of its importance, Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch granted the town city status in 1797, giving it the title Città Hompesch, a name it proudly retains today.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces

At the heart of Żabbar stands the magnificent Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces, one of Malta's most important pilgrimage churches. Built in the Baroque tradition and renowned for its elegant interior, the sanctuary has welcomed pilgrims for centuries. In 1951, the revered image of Our Lady of Graces was solemnly crowned, reinforcing the church's significance within Malta's religious heritage.

Today, the sanctuary remains both an active place of worship and one of the town's principal cultural landmarks.

• colourful Maltese balconies;
• quiet neighbourhood squares;
• family-run cafés;
