Discover the Three Cities by Bike: A Scenic and Historical Ride in Malta

Explore the Three Cities on Two Wheels

Exploring the Three Cities (Cottonera district) by bike is a unique experience that blends history, breathtaking views, and the Mediterranean atmosphere. While Malta is renowned for its exceptional heritage, discovering its narrow streets on a bicycle allows you to immerse yourself in its authentic charm.

A Historic Ride Through Malta’s Past

The Three Cities—Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua), and Senglea (Isla)—form a historic trio that played a crucial role in the Great Siege of 1565, where the Knights and the Maltese people bravely resisted the Ottoman invaders. Today, as you cycle along their quiet streets, it is hard to imagine the chaos of past battles amidst the serene blue waters and sunlit fortifications. These cities sit on two small peninsulas forming a trident-like shape with Kalkara. Their striking architecture, surrounded by ancient ramparts, can be admired from the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta.

A Perfect Cycling Route with Stunning Views

A small coastal road, often pedestrian-friendly and with little traffic, connects the Three Cities, making it an ideal cycling route. However, be mindful of Malta’s left-hand traffic! Starting from Senglea, the route leads to the charming village of Kalkara via Bormla and Birgu. If the weather permits, consider extending your trip to the small beach at Rinella for a refreshing swim.

Best Time to Go

The route is relatively easy and can be enjoyed year-round, though a morning start is advisable during summer months. Plan for a half-day round trip, but your adventure’s duration will depend on your curiosity and the number of stops, visits, and swims you take along the way!

Recommended Cycling Itinerary (Starting from The Snop House)

1. Senglea (Isla): A Breathtaking Start

Begin your ride at Gardjola Garden, perched on the ramparts. The observation tower offers a stunning panoramic view of Valletta and the Grand Harbour. From there, descend to the seafront, make a detour to Isla Point, and cycle along the marina towards the footbridge, soaking in picturesque views of Birgu.

2. Bormla (Cospicua): A Journey Through History

As you enter Bormla, take advantage of elevated pavement sections for a great vantage point over Senglea. Pass through the historic ramparts near the Malta at War Museum (highly recommended for history enthusiasts) before heading towards Birgu.

3. Birgu (Vittoriosa): The Heart of the Three Cities

Wander through the maze-like streets of this medieval town, admiring its caramel-toned buildings, palaces, and the famous Knights’ inns. Pause at the central square for a coffee at Café do Brazil and soak up the traditional Maltese ambiance. Then, cycle down to the marina and continue towards Fort Saint Angelo (worth a visit!). On your way back, take an immediate left after the small bridge under the arcades to reach Kalkara Bay.

4. Kalkara: A Coastal Escape

On the opposite shore, inviting ladders descend into crystal-clear waters— perfect for a spontaneous dip! Ride along the marina towards the village of Kalkara, then continue to the Esplora Interactive Science Centre. From there, a short ride will take you to Rinella Beach, a great spot to relax before heading back.

Return Route

Follow the same scenic path back, cycling along the full length of the seafront to enjoy the changing light over the harbor.

Practical Information

Total ride duration: 3 to 4 hours, including photo stops and visits.
Best time to visit: March to June & September to November to avoid peak summer heat.
