Leaving the hushed rigor of business law firms to embrace the art of hospitality might seem, at first glance, like an unexpected turn. And yet, for Sophie Nicolas, honorary solicitor at the Paris Court of Appeal and specialist in banking and finance law, this transition was an obvious choice: a way to continue pursuing excellence in a different way, with the same high standards and passion.
A career forged in leading firms

Trained in public law and business law, Sophie has distinguished herself in prestigious Anglo-Saxon firms — Slaughter & May, Ashurst, Bird & Bird, Taylor Wessing — where she has spent more than two decades putting her talent to work for lenders, borrowers and public entities on complex transactions (project finance, asset finance, acquisition finance, venture loans), restructuring and general corporate finance.
This exemplary career, marked by intellectual rigor, human relations and total availability, illustrates the typical life of a business lawyer: demanding, exciting, but often exhausting.
The Maltese turn: a dream that has become a truly special place
In 2008, while her career was still in full swing, Sophie Nicolas took the first step towards an idea that had been on her mind for a long time: creating a place that reflected her personality, refined yet authentic, where attention to detail would rival the warmth of the welcome.
This is how her hotel on the island of Malta came to be, housed in a carefully restored patrician residence. Eight years later, this unique place has established itself as a benchmark in charming hotels, recently crowned in 2025 by the Michelin Guide, an international symbol of excellence.
Since 2022, after hanging up her lawyer's robe, Sophie Nicolas has devoted all her energy to managing this hotel, which she has turned into a place of experience, art and serenity. The lawyer has become a hotelier, but without ever compromising on her core values: analysis, high standards, listening and perseverance.

The common thread of excellence
From finalizing contracts with meticulous attention to detail to welcoming guests, the common thread remains the same: a focus on service, personal commitment and the pursuit of perfection. This transition from a rational world to a sensory one demonstrates that no expertise is lost; it is transformed and enriched.
Legal experience, with its structure and precision, proves to be a significant advantage in any entrepreneurial venture. Managing a high-end hotel requires the same contractual rigor, administrative vigilance and keen sense of negotiation as in the
practice of law.
An invitation to reinvent your career
At a time when the profession of business lawyer is experiencing increasing rates of burnout, Sophie Nicolas's career path offers a message of hope: it is possible to reinvent yourself without losing sight of who you are and to build a new chapter of your life on the foundations of a demanding career.
Excellence never fades — it simply takes on a new form. And sometimes, it finds its most beautiful expression in the smile of a guest welcomed in the early morning under the Mediterranean sun.
